AIG CLASS AT WCHS HELD AT 8:00 AM

This week our first AIG class was held at WCHS at 8:00 a.m. before regular classes began at 9;00.  It was on a volunteer basis.  Four students took part in the lesson in which they created six word stories inspired by American author Ernest Hemingway and started work on designing an original lesson plan that will be delivered in one of their classes.  These lessons will be done using either the Mimio board in the classroom or Educreations which is an iPad app.  Other students promised to attend next week's class.  Below are a photos from this first class.

WORK ON SCHS MOVIE CONTINUES

This week work continued on the movie documenting all of the original coats of arms created by the Senior English classes.  Earlier a movie trailer was created but now students are creating four videos that will compete the final movie.  Below is a quick video of one student photographing individual coats of arms.

DIGITAL STORIES BY ECHS STUDENTS

I worked this week at ECHS with the students in writing.  They were asked to pair up into teams and collaborate on the beginnings of a digital story.  After they wrote the story together, they then recorded it on an app on my iPad called Educreations.  They illustrated it first and then recorded the narration.  Below is a  photograph of the students working on their assignments.

Here is one of the children's stories.

SIX WORD STORIES

SIX WORD STORY

Hello everyone.  This week you will all demonstrate what kind of authors you all are.  In the 1920s' friends of American author, Ernest Hemingway, bet him that he couldn't write a complete story using only six words.  Guess what?  They had to pay up because he was successful.  Not only was he successful but it was said that he considered it to be his best work.  So are you wondering what the six powerful words were?  Here is his complete story:
"For sale: baby shoes, never used."

What do you think?  What can you gather from the six words?  Surely anyone can accomplish this - right?  Why it's only six words!  Well you are going to try your hand at it but you're going to do two of them.  As you can see I have included a photograph below.  Use this as inspiration for your first six word story.  Then create your second six word story about any subject you like.  That's it.  Piece of cake, huh?  We'll see.

In an email type your first story inspired by the attached photograph and include your name.  Then under it type your second story with your name as well.  Send them both to me via email.  My email address is lhewett@columbus.k12.nc.us .  As you all send me your stories I will add them to this blog post.  Keep checking in to see what your peers have created.  Good luck and good writing!

THREE SENIORS ASSIST WITH MOVIE TRAILER

This week I met with English instructor, Ms. Peggy Smith.  She showed me the beautiful coats of arms that all the seniors had made in English class.  I suggested documenting this project somehow.  So we created a movie trailer with the assistance of three senior volunteers, one of which was Austin below.  They did the filming in the classes during the presentations and editing.  The entire trailer was made on an iPad using the app called iMovie.  You can view the movie trailer below.  Later we are going to create a video of all the seniors holding their own coat of arms.  This will be attached to the trailer.

WORKING WITH STUDENTS AT LAST

Finally this week I had the pleasure of working with some students at two of my high schools.  Since I love technology so much I decided to introduce them to a great app that I have on my iPad called MadPad.  It allows one to upload short clips of video with sound, create a set of the clips and finally make a remix.  They did an awesome job and had a lot of fun.  Below are photos of some of them playing - working, with the app.  I've also included one of the remixes.
